Charybdis - knitted shawl pattern - digital download
The core of the shawl is an adaptation of a quilt block with some additions to turn the square block into a triangle.
Skill Level: Advanced beginner. The pattern relies on the use of the short row wrap and turn technique.
Materials: Cloudborn Fibers, Merino Superwash Sock-Twist (80% Superwash Merino Wool, 20% Nylon). This is a fingering weight yarn. This pattern is scalable to other weights of yarn. To assist with estimating the amount of yarn, information is included at the bottom of the pattern.
The pattern is written for 14 colors. It is possible to work this with as few as two colors; alternating colors for each layer. In the example pictured one color was used twice.
For the center and the first five layers (colors A through E) can be worked using mini skeins that have approximately 115 yards per mini skein. The remaining colors requires approximately half if a 400 yard skein.
Tools: Size 1 US (2.5 mm) needles. One set(5) of dpns and one or more circular needles. Tapestry needle to seam the center and finish loose ends.
Gauge: 30 sts over 4 inches / 10 cm; 56 rows over 4inches / 10 cm.
Size: 51 inches (129.5 cm.) across the top. 33 (84 cm.) inches from middle of the top to the bottom point of the triangle.
If a larger weight of yarn is used the size will be larger. You can also adjust the size by working fewer or more layers of triangles.
